Summary of the standards of behaviour expected in class.
Fundamental behaviours
- Respect
- Respect your instructors, who ensure a safe training environment.
- Respect fellow students’ privacy, safety, and personal space.
- Respect the School, its elders, and its Kung Fu styles.
- Non-violence
- Uphold a mindset of non-violence and not apply the methods of Kung Fu outside the premises unless threatened by actual physical violence and only when all other reasonable methods of persuasion have failed.
Failure to meet these can lead to: warnings, suspension or expulsion.
Class etiquette
- Arrival
- Respect the training environment, bowing upon entry and exit.
- Wear a clean and tidy club uniform every lesson.
- Quickly line up according to your grades.
- Bow at beginning and end of each instruction period, as guided.
- During and after class
- Do not touch or instruct other students.
- Follow instructor guidance on safe, respectful partner work at all times.
- Do not disrupt the class.
- When watching sparring and demonstrations: Hands on hips, observe and learn.
- If arriving late:
- Bow then enter class at the back.
- Warm up on your own first for about 10 minutes.
- Wait for the instructor to invite you to join your correct place in the lines.
- If leaving early:
- Put your hand up and explain the reason.
- If ill, inform the instructor and provide an emergency contact number.
Gradings
- Grading forms are to be filled out and fees given to the School before each Grading.
- The assessment at each grading is final.
- The awarded sash is to be worn with the uniform after the grading.
- Students cannot demand to go for certain grades. This will be decided by the School.
Wing Chun Ancestral Rules of Conduct
- Remain disciplined – uphold yourself ethically as a martial artist.
- Practice courtesy and righteousness – serve the community and honour your family.
- Love your fellow students or classmates – be united and avoid conflicts.
- Limit your desires and pursuit of bodily pleasures – preserve the proper spirit.
- Train diligently and make it a habit – maintain your skills.
- Learn to develop spiritual tranquility – abstain from arguments and fights.
- Participate in society – be conservative, cultured and gentle in your manners.
- Help the weak and very young – use your martial skills for the good of humanity.
- Pass on the tradition – preserve this Chinese art and its Rules of Conduct.
